Guilford Survives Battle with Hollins

The Guilford College women's basketball team welcomed Hollins University for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. After a fast start by Hollins, Courtney McMillan and the Quakers battled back for the 72-57 victory.

McMillan finished the evening with a game-high 23 points, going 9-11 from the free throw line. Lindsay Gauldin chipped in another 15 points for GC.

Hollins (1-14, 0-12) scored the opening five points as both teams struggled from the field. Guilford (16-3, 9-3) responded with six-straight points to take a one-point edge with 5:44 remaining in the first. The visitors answered with a run of their own, dropping seven of the next 10 points to recapture the lead, 12-9.

The Quakers pulled within one on multiple occasions but Hollins closed the opening period scoring the final four points. Hollins led 19-14 going to the second.

The second was a see-saw affair with Guilford going on a 9-0 run to capture the 25-22 lead. Hollins did not back down as it stayed withing five points and capped of the second with 9-0 run of its own to led 38-34 going into the half.

Hollins notched the opening two points but then GC took over. The Quakers went on a tear, scoring 19 of the next 21 points including 10 off the hand of McMillan. Hollins broke the stretch as it scored the next three points but McMillan made the final two free throws as Guilford led by 10 (55-45) going to the final stanza.

In the fourth, the visitors cut the difference to single-digits twice but GC expanded its advantage back to double-digits including a game-high lead of 17 (68-51) with 4:20 on the clock. The Quakers held the advantage and went on to win by 15.

J'la Hinson dropped 14 points with six assists while Anna Giannopoulou finished the night with eight points, 14 rebounds and seven steals. Guilford forced 30 turnovers and scored 27 points off those turnovers.

The Quakers will host Randolph College on Saturday, January 28 in a rematch from earlier this season. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
