Carroll Grits out Road Win over Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. – The Carroll University women's basketball team fought back in the second half to take the win over Beloit College by a score of 64-53. Kate Christian scored a career-high 20 points while knocking down 3-5 threes with six rebounds and four assists. Chloe Halverson pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench.
 
The Pioneers (7-5) struggled shooting the basketball overall but found a way by making 7 three-point baskets, with the help of 17 made free throws. The Pios' out-rebounded the Bucs 41-27, to go with 14 offensive rebounds. Carroll surrendered 20 turnovers and 20 points off turnovers to Beloit, but Carroll's 12 second-chance points helped provide them a buffer.
 
The Pios started the game with the lead early on, and a Christian three-pointer from deep gave Carroll a 7-2 lead in the first three minutes. The Pioneers went a bit cold, not scoring again for another seven minutes as Beloit took a four-point lead. Olivia Rangel scored Carroll's last four points of the first quarter but a Beloit three-pointer put Carroll down five going into the second quarter. After the Bucs took a six-point lead, Carroll went on a 7-0 run with the help of free throws from Christian and a three-point play by Lauren Soyke. Beloit regained control with a 9-2 run, but Christian helped cut the lead down to three after four straight points going into halftime.
 
Brooke Foster started the second half with a pair of made free throws after going scoreless in the first half. Carroll regained the lead at the 6:36 mark thanks to Katie Evans' layup in the paint, followed up by a Foster three-pointer. Christian knocked down a pair of three-pointers during a Pioneer 9-0 run that pushed their lead up to 10 points. Carroll entered the fourth quarter after scoring 21 points in the third on 6-13 shooting and four made three-pointers. Foster made her second and third three-pointers of the game to get the lead to 14 early into the final period. Rangel and Christian helped close out the game with a pair of three-point plays after being fouled in the paint. Christian scored her 20th point on a made free throw in the final seconds.
 
The Pioneers return to the CCIW on Wednesday, January 4 at Carthage College in Kenosha.
