More news about: Carroll

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Carroll University women's basketball team clawed back after a tough first quarter but were unable to hold on in a loss to the Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles by a score of 52-58. Olivia Rangel led the Pios with 14 points, while Allison Thompson added 11 points, and eight rebounds.

The Pioneers (2-3) move to 0-3 against WIAC teams through five games this season. Carroll struggled from behind the arc, only making 2-12 three-pointers, but shot better than La Crosse from the floor with 22 made baskets. Carroll forced 19 turnovers and grabbed 15 steals, which turned into 20 points off turnovers. The Pios led 34-22 in the paint but fell 10-15 in second-chance points. Carroll was out-rebounded 35-46.

After a tough start to the game, Carroll found themselves down 12-4 before the media timeout. Natalie Gricius cut the lead to four with a three-point basket but the Eagles advanced the lead to 20-10 going into the second quarter. Down 12, Carroll went on a 17-6 run in the second ten minutes. Chloe Halverson scored eight points with a three-pointer, followed up by five from Rangel. Carroll went into halftime down one.

Kate Christian gave Carroll their first lead of the game after the first made basket of the second half, and Thompson gave Carroll their largest lead of the game with four points after a jumpshot in the paint. The Eagles tied the game with 2:48 left in the third and shortly had the lead with 40 seconds remaining but Thompson's second field goal of the quarter put Carroll back up by one going into the fourth.

With Carroll up four, the Eagles started a 10-0 run that was silenced by Emilie Wizner just before the media timeout. La Crosse had a five-point lead with 2:00 left, which Christian and Rangel helped cut down to two. Costly fouls put the Eagles at the free throw line, and they went 9-14 at the line in the fourth to secure the victory over Carroll.

The Pios will head to Chicago on Tuesday, November 22 to face the University of Chicago before Thanksgiving.
