Keuka College Drops Afternoon Game at Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost an Empire 8 Conference game at Houghton College 52-47 on Saturday afternoon.

Keuka College (1-19, 0-12 Empire 8) was led by Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) with 16 points. Jenna LaMere (Scottsville, N.Y. / Wheatland-Chili) posted a career-high on the boards, grabbing 12 rebounds for the Wolves.

It was a slow start for the Wolves and Highlanders as it was tied 3-3 four minutes in on Saturday. Houghton went on an 8-0 run to take an 11-3 lead over the Wolves. Megan Brown (Middleburgh, N.Y. / Middleburgh) made a layup to end the run, but Houghton held a 13-7 advantage after the first.

The Wolves posted their best quarter in the second. Jenna LaMere opened the scoring with a layup for the Wolves. Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) later hit a three for the Wolves. A second-change jumper by LaMere later tied the game and Megan Brown gave the Wolves a 16-14 lead, forcing the Highlanders into a timeout. The Wolves continued to attack the offensive glass as Sydney Brown kept the run going with a second-chance layup. Houghton converted a three-point play to close the scoring, but the Wolves led 18-17 at the half.

Following a Keuka free throw out of halftime, Houghton hit a three, but Amelia Poole (Bloomfield, N.Y. / Bloomfield) answered with a three of her own to swing the lead back to the Wolves. Houghton tied it but a layup by Meaghan McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) pushed the lead back to the Wolves 24-22. Nice time down the floor, Houghton tied the game at 24-24. It was followed by a three for the hosts as Houghton took the lead. Following a Katherine Deatherage (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Marcus Whitman) layup, Houghton scored nine straight. The Wolves closed the quarter with threes by Poole and Mahoney, but Houghton led 36-32 going into the final quarter.

Houghton scored the first four points of the fourth to widen their advantage. Killian Mahoney cut into it with a three, but Houghton answered right back with a three of their own. Another Mahoney three later in the fourth made it a one-possession game, 45-42, with 2:12 left to play. Keuka got a defensive stop, but their game-tying three attempt was off and the Highlanders gained possession. Houghton followed with five straight points to secure the game as the Highlanders defeated the Wolves 52-47.

  • 16 points are the second-most in a game for Mahoney this season

Up Next for Keuka College: The Green and Gold have a week off before returning to the floor for another Empire 8 weekend. The Wolves will play at St. John Fisher College on Friday night and then face Nazareth College on the road on Saturday.
