Griffins Drop Third Straight AEC Decision with Loss to Pacers

Scranton, Pa. - (1/26/2022) - A season-high 22 points from junior guard Elise Sylvester (Pottstown, Pa.) and a 22-point, 17-rebound double-double from junior Haley Crossley (Warminster, Pa.) was not enough for for Gwynedd Mercy University (9-10, 3-3) to escape their third straight Atlantic East Conference (AEC) loss as Marywood University (7-8, 2-3) used the third quarter to recover and surpass the Griffins in an 83-78 final. Sylvester made four (4-of-7, .571) of her eight field goals (8-of-18, .444) from long range and supported her shooting with three rebounds, seven assists, and a pair of steals. Crossley grabbed a dozen (12) of her rebounds on the defensive glass, while recording five assists and a steal. Sophomore guard Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.) was the third Griffin in double figures as she provided Gwynedd Mercy University with 12 points in addition to her seven rebounds and four steals.

Crossley and Eggers captained a first-half effort that earned Gwynedd Mercy University a 40-32 (0:15) halftime advantage. The duo helped establish a lead in the first quarter with a 7-0 (7:48) opening run and a 9-2 finishing fury that secured the Griffins a 30-20 (0:29) favor for the break. A low-scoring second quarter saw Marywood University narrow the gap by two points, 40-32 (0:15), but the Pacer push came late in the third quarter as they outscored the Griffins 18-6 over the final 3:53 to take their first lead of the contest; 63-63 (0:03). With momentum in hand, Marywood University extended their lead to 11 points, 79-68 (2:32), before fending off the Griffins in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.
