No. 5/7 Storm surge past Spartans with record-breaking first half

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Cameron Kincaid tied her career-high scoring, Jenna Taylor was perfect from the floor for 17 points, and the No. 5/7 Simpson College women's basketball team broke the school record for most points scored in a half during a dominating 97-59 win at Dubuque.

Simpson's offense was nearly unstoppable in the first half as the Storm (14-1, 6-0 A-R-C) raced out to a 67-30 halftime lead while shooting 80.0 percent from the floor (24-30), 81.8 percent behind the arc (9-11), and 100 percent at the free throw line (10-10). The Storm's 67 first-half points surpassed the previous school record of 66 set against Nebraska Wesleyan on Dec. 2, 2017 and tied against Aurora on Dec. 20, 2019.

The Storm's first-half onslaught was capped off by a 25-0 run in the final 5:01 of the second quarter. Simpson connected on 10-of-10 attempts from the floor and used stifling defense to force the Spartans (9-7, 3-4 A-R-C) into five turnovers during the span. The Storm also had a big run in the first quarter, scoring 12 unanswered in 2:44 to establish an early double-digit lead and never look back.

Simpson led by as many as 48 in the second half after an 8-0 spurt gave the Storm an 88-40 tilt with 27 seconds left in the third. Kincaid and Anna Wanek each had seven points in the third frame to lead the team in the final 20 minutes.

Kincaid racked up a game-high 26 points, including 19 in the first half, to lead the Storm while shooting 66.7 percent from the field (6-9, 1-1 3FG) and making all 13 of her free throws. Taylor was perfect from the floor (6-6, 3-3 3FG) while contributing 17 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Anna Wanek chipped in 16 points (7-10, 2-3 3FG), Regan Freland added 13 points (5-9, 3-5 3FG), four assists, two rebounds, a block and a steal, and Cassie Nash tallied eight points (4-5), five steals, five assists and two boards. Kia Rasmussen had seven assists for the fourth time this season as well as five steals, and Shaniah Temple hauled in five rebounds and scored four points in eight minutes.

As a unit, Simpson was 57.6 percent efficient from field goal range with 34 baskets in 59 attempts. The Storm knocked down 12 three-pointers for the second game in a row while shooting 57.1 percent from outside, the highest efficiency from three-point land since converting 61.9 percent against Concordia-Moorhread on Nov. 29, 2019. Simpson made 17 of 19 attempts at the charity stripe for an 89.5 percent shooting clip.

The Storm registered 29 assists and 18 steals in the game while holding a plus-two rebounding margin (30-28). Simpson scored 32 points off Dubuque's 21 turnovers.
