No. 5 Oglethorpe's season comes to close with 72-58 loss to Rhodes in SAA semifinals

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team saw their season come to a close Friday night in Jackson, Mississippi, as they fell to the third-seeded Rhodes Lynx 72-58 at the Hangar Dome. The second-seeded Stormy Petrels fell behind early and never really gained a foothold in the contest. Rhodes led by as many as 20 points en route to the victory.

Rhodes drove out to a lead early, outscoring Oglethorpe 16-11 in the first quarter. The Petrels held leads of 2-0 and 4-3 early, but those turned out to be their only advantages of the game. The Petrels outscored the Lynx 15-14 in the second quarter and stayed in the game headed into halftime. They used a 10-3 run to chip away at the Rhodes lead and get it down to 22-21 with 4:58 left in the half. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half and Rhodes led 30-26 at the break.

The Petrels scored right away to start the second half and make it 30-28, but the Lynx proceeded to embark on a 15-1 run over the next 4:55 to pull out to a 45-29 lead with 3:56 left in the third quarter. Rhodes then put the game away with an 8-1 run midway through the fourth quarter, building a 62-42 advantage with 3:49 left. 

Senior Savannah LeGate led the Petrels in the final game of her collegiate career, scoring 24 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. Junior guard Nikki Reed added 10 points, four steals and three assists.

Oglethorpe shot 29.9 percent from the field and 51.7 percent from the free throw line, while converting on just 3 of 14 three-point attempts and committing 25 turnovers.
