No. 4 Oglethorpe sees winning streaks end at hands of No. 8 Millsaps

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team saw their multi-year winning streaks come to a close Sunday afternoon at Dorough Field House, as the fourth-ranked Stormy Petrels fell to the eighth-ranked Millsaps Majors 63-48. The loss ended Oglethorpe's 34-game winning streak dating to Nov. 15, 2019; their 24-game SAA winning streak dating to Feb. 24, 2019; and their 21-game home winning streak dating to Feb. 3, 2019. It also dropped them into a virtual tie with Millsaps atop the SAA standings with one loss apiece.

The Petrels beat the Majors Saturday night with a subpar shooting night, converting at a 32 percent clip but using a big rebounding advantage and turnover advantage to earn enough extra possessions to overcome it. They were unable to overcome their shooting struggles on Sunday, though, despite gaining plenty of extra possessions by forcing a whopping 36 Millsaps giveaways. The home side shot just 20.3 percent from the field, though, and made just 3 of 27 three-point attempts. The Majors enjoyed a 48-42 rebounding advantage, too, despite a big 25-10 deficit on the offensive boards that allowed the Petrels to outscore them 23-7 in second chance points.

The teams locked in a defensive struggle in the first quarter, with the score tied at 10-10 headed to the second. Millsaps started to come untracked and build a bit of an advantage, though. They outscored the Petrels 11-2 over a 2:40 stretch to build a 27-18 lead with 3:45 left in the first half. The Petrels responded with a couple of 3-pointers in the last two minutes to enter the locker room down just 4 points, 28-24.

However, the Majors spent much of the second half extending their lead to an insurmountable level. They outscored the home side 26-11 over a nine-minute stretching bridging the quarter break and built a 61-43 advantage with 2:13 remaining. That proved too much for the Petrels to overcome.

The Petrels were led by senior center Savannah LeGate, who scored 14 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and made four blocks. She made 5 of 14 shots from the field, though, and no other Petrel scored in double figures. Freshman forward Omotese Ajorgbor scored 9 points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench.
