Montclair St. Pulls Away from William Paterson in Second Half, 67-43

Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State women's basketball team outscored William Paterson 30-15 in the second half en route to a 67-43 victory over the Pioneers Saturday afternoon.

Senior TAYLOR BROWN and sophomore NICKIE CARTER each recorded a game-high 15 points for the Red Hawks (2-1, 2-0 NJAC). William Paterson (0-2, 0-2 NJAC) received 11 points each from Brianna Smith and Allison McBride in the setback.

The Pioneers took the early 3-2 advantage, but that would be the only time they would lead all afternoon. Rookie KENDALL HODGES tallied Montclair's first five points before a Brown triple snapped a seven-all tie to start a 6-0 run. The Red Hawks stingy defense limited the Pioneers to just one made basket and four points over the final 5:53 of the opening stanza.

A three-pointer by Smith brought the lead down to five with 6:21 left in the second, but a 9-2 Red Hawk rally over the next two minutes stopped the Pioneer comeback. Junior KELLY SMITH capped off first-half scoring after snaring a rebound off a Brown missed three and converting the put-back.

The Red Hawks came alive in the third, opening the frame with a 10-1 spurt and allowing just one point for over six minutes of play. The lead swelled to 21 points on a fast-break conversion by sophomore SANIYA MYERS off a feed from MAHOGANY WORSLEY-WOOTEN. William Paterson made just one basket in the third quarter, allowing Montclair to take a 23-point lead into the fourth. The Red Hawks continued to be tough on defense, allowing just two field goals in the fourth period to help lead MSU to victory.

Making her second consecutive start, Smith pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds to go along with six points as Hodges added nine points and five assists. Myers contributed six points and seven boards, while rookies KELEYSHA PETIT-FRERE and KAYLA WORSLEY-WOOTEN tallied their first collegiate points in the win. Justina Cabezas recorded eight points and eight rebounds in the setback.

The Red Hawks return home Friday evening, hosting Kean University at 5 pm. As per NJAC policy, fans will not be permitted inside the Panzer Athletic Center and are encouraged to watch the Red Hawk Sports Network YouTube channel.
