University of Dubuque's Hot Shooting Stun Loras on Their Homecourt

DUBUQUE, Iowa – University of Dubuque women's basketball lost at Loras College by 26 points just two and a half weeks ago, however Wednesday night was a different story, as the Spartans got their revenge on the Duhawks with a 69-61 win for the Spartans first win at Loras since Feb. 6, 2016.

The Spartans (4-4, 3-1 A-R-C) had nine players score on their way to victory, led by Tabria Thomas with 16 points. Thomas stuffed the stat sheet as she added eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block to go along with the 16 points. Miah Smith followed Thomas with 16 points of her own and finished one rebound shy of collecting her second straight double-double. After missing the last two games, Alli Bailey returned off the bench and looked like her old self, scoring 12 points and hauling in six rebounds.

With the game all even at 5-5 2:09 into the contest, the Spartans rattled off a 10-0 run over the following four minutes for the early 15-5 lead. However, Loras (2-3, 0-2 A-R-C) would score 10 of the final 12 points of the opening frame to give the Spartans just a 17-15 lead through one. The two teams would continue to trade baskets in the second quarter for the Spartans take a 36-31 lead into the locker room.

UD would build their lead up to as many as nine points at multiple points in the third quarter but could never get over the hump and back to double digits and the Duhawks would chip away at that lead to pull within one at 48-47 heading into the fourth quarter. With the Spartans still clinging to that one-point lead after a Loras three-pointer with 4:10 remaining, senior Morgan Meerstein weaved her way into the paint for a lay-up to get the lead back up to three points and the Duhawks would never get any closer. The Spartan defense would hold the Duhawks without a field goal for the next four minutes and UD would salt away the game at the free throw line.

The Spartans dominated in most categories but they set the tone on the glass, outrebounding the Duhawks 37-25, which would lead to a 14-9 advantage in second chance points and 40-24 advantage in the paint. It was a total team effort on Wednesday night, as the UD bench scored nearly half of the team's points and outscored the Loras bench, 32-11.

The UD win snaps an eight-game losing streak to the Duhawks.

The Spartans will look to keep building upon their three-game winning streak when they travel to Simpson College on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
