DeBell Double-Double Delivers Win for R-MC Women’s Hoops

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va./Saint Gertrude) recorded her first collegiate double-double with 15 points and a career-best 19 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team downed Ferrum 77-64 in ODAC action in the head coaching debut of Lindsey Burke.

How it Happened:

  • Junior Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) had a three-pointer and a jumper around a bucket by DeBell as the Yellow Jackets scored the first seven points of the contest. A basket by sophomore Devan Conrad (Parkville, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) gave R-MC an 11-3 edge before the Panthers tallied seven straight to pull within one at 11-10 with two minutes left in the first quarter. The home team led by one late before a jumper in the paint by DeBell gave the Yellow Jackets a 17-14 lead after one period.
  • After Ferrum had the first bucket of the second quarter, DeBell had two baskets in an 8-0 spurt as R-MC went up 25-16 three minutes into the period. The Panthers had the next four points before a triple by freshman Morgan Hough (Bradenton, Fla./IMG Academy) capped a 15-0 run as the Yellow Jackets sprinted to a 40-21 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the half. Ferrum closed the quarter on a 9-2 spurt as R-MC led 42-30 at the break. DeBell and Hatfield both had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
  • A layup by senior Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va./Amelia Academy) gave R-MC a 14-point lead at 49-35 three minutes into the third period. Ferrum closed with seven late before a pair of three throws by Arrington gave the Yellow Jackets a 58-49 edge after three quarters.
  • A triple by the Panthers made it a six-point game before a layup by Arrington finished a 6-2 run as the lead grew back to 10 at 64-54 three minutes into the final period. Ferrum trailed by nine midway through the quarter before another layup by Arrington gave R-MC an 11-point advantage at 68-57. The Yellow Jackets would maintain a double-digit lead before securing the 77-64 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had four score in double figures. Hatfield topped the team with 16, while DeBell and Arrington both tallied 15. Conrad added 10 off the bench.
  • R-MC held a 54-36 advantage on the boards and had a 19-7 edge in second-chance points. DeBell had 11 of her 19 caroms in the fourth quarter.
  • Freshman Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) had nine points and nine rebounds in her collegiate debut.
  • Arrington and Hatfield both had eight rebounds.
  • Hatfield paced the victors with six assists, while Arrington had five and DeBell added four.
  • R-MC went 14 for 16 from the free throw line for 87.5%. Arrington was 6 for 6 from the charity stripe.
