No. 1 Hope Stuns Illinois Wesleyan With Game-Ending, 14-2 Run

Fueled by a decisive and stunning, game-ending run, the top-ranked Hope College women's basketball team survived Illinois Wesleyan University's upset bid for a 72-69 victory on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Flying Dutch advanced to sectional play next week and improved to 28-0 overall in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 2,007. 

Hope will face Baldwin-Wallace University (Ohio) on Friday, March 13 at a site to be announced. The University of Wisconsin-Oskhosh and Loras College (Iowa) will be in the other sectional semifinal.

The Flying Dutch outscored Illinois Wesleyan (19-9) by a 14-2 margin over the final 4 minutes, 12 seconds.

Hope took the lead for good at 71-69 on a Kenedy Schoonveld layup off an inbounds play with 30 seconds remaining.

Schoonveld totaled a team-high 20 points, including nine during the fourth quarter. Forward Olivia Voskuil chipped in 17 points, 12 of which ame during the second half.

Illinois Wesleyan received a game-high 32 points from guard Kendall Sosa. The 69 points was the most scored by an opponent against Hope's No. 1-ranked scoring defense all season. The Flying Dutch entered allowing 42.2 points per game.

This is Hope's third sectional appearance in four years and 10th overall under head coach Brian Morehouse.
