Cortland Women Use Balance to Defeat Plattsburgh, 78-54

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Ten Cortland players reached the scoring column, led by Beth Bonin's (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) 18 points, as the Red Dragons defeated Plattsburgh, 78-54, in a SUNYAC women's basketball matchup at Corey Gymnasium.
 
Cortland improved to 19-3 overall and 13-2 in the SUNYAC and remains in second place in the conference, one game behind 14-1 New Paltz. The Red Dragons travel to face the Hawks on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
 
Bonin made 7-of-16 shots overall and 4-of-9 3-pointers. She scored 11 of her 18 points in the second quarter to help Cortland outscore the Cardinals in that period, 25-15, and take a 40-27 halftime lead. Cortland's lead remained in double figures the entire second half.
 
Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals and Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) totaled nine points, a career-high four assists and a career-high tying seven rebounds. Joka Oyefeso (Staten Island/Port Richmond) blocked four shots and matched her career highs with seven points and seven rebounds. Flo Hunte (Elmont/Sewanhaka) also scored seven points in just nine minutes off the bench.
 
Theresa Quinn led Plattsburgh (7-16, 4-12 SUNYAC) with 14 points. Mya Smith tallied nine points and grabbed six rebounds and Taylor Clare led the team with seven rebounds.
 
Cortland bounced back after shooting just 25 percent (4-of-16) in the first quarter to hit 10-of-16 shots (63 percent) in the second quarter. The Red Dragons finished the game at 38 percent overall and 31 percent (9-of-29) from 3-point land, as well as 13-of-15 (87 percent) from the foul line. Plattsburgh shot 37 percent overall and 28 percent (5-of-18) from the arc.
