Schmelter’s Career Night Lifts WashU Past Rochester

St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 31, 2020 – Senior forward Kristina Schmelter scored a career-high 28 points and added 14 boards as the Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team posted a 79-67 victory over the University of Rochester Friday at the WU Field House in St. Louis.

Schmelter was 9-of-14 from the field and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line in the victory.The victory for head coach Randi Henderson was her 50th at WashU.

WashU improved to 9-8 and 2-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Rochester dropped to 7-10 and 1-5 in the UAA.

WashU shot 42.4 percent (28-66) from the field in the win and outrebounded Rochester 52-37. 

Freshman guard Sammi Matoush had 14 points, while sophomore forward Samantha Weaver had 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists and freshman Maya Arnott added 10 points in her first career start.

Rochester went on an 8-0 run to end the first quarter and built a 17-12 lead. The Bears hit just 6-of-18 from the field and had six turnovers in the opening quarter.

The Yellowjackets hit a three to open the second to extend the run to 11-0 and make it 20-12. WashU went on an 8-2 run and then freshman Naomi Jackson canned a three to tie the game at 24-24 with 3:09 left. 

Rochester led 30-27 at the half as Weaver led the Bears with nine points.

Matoush hit a three to put WashU put 40-34 with 5:50 left in the third, and then a three by freshman Molly Gannon with eight seconds left in the quarter pushed it to 49-43 after three.

Two free-throws by Schmelter pushed the lead to 55-47, and then a lay-up by Gannon elevated the lead to double figures (59-49) with 6:26 left.

Hannah Lindemuth (14), Tessa Ludwick (12), Shannon Loiseau (12) all scored in double figures for Rochester, which had eight blocks and 10 steals in the loss.

WashU closes out a four-game homestand against No. 25-ranked Emory on Sunday at 2 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Rochester 48-18, and the Bears have won the last four meetings between the two teams … The Bears are 27-9 at home under Henderson in three seasons … Schmelter is approaching 700 points for her career (690).
