Women’s Basketball Defeats Wells College 60-28

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team defeated Wells College 60-28 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference game on Wednesday.

The game was the 1,000th played in the history of the Keuka College Women's Basketball program.

Sam Laranjo (Averill Park, N.Y. / Averill Park) led Keuka College (7-6, 3-3 NEAC) with 16 points. Sydney Bloom (Penn Yan, N.Y. / Penn Yan Academy) added 10 for the Wolves and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The Express scored the opening point from the free throw line. After the Wolves took the lead, Wells cut into it with a jumper to make it 6-3 Keuka with 6:57 left in the first. The Wolves hit their stride as Keuka closed the quarter with 18 unanswered points to lead 24-3 after the first.

Bloom hit a three and Laranjo made a layup to start the second and extend the Keuka run to 23-0 before Wells got back on the board via a free throw. Both teams would net ten points in the second as the Wolves led 34-13 at the break.

Both teams struggled to get in a rhythm in the second half. The Wolves shot 20% in the third quarter. Wells bested them, going 22% from the floor, but the scoreboard did not reflect it as Keuka led 43-20 going to the final quarter.

The Wolves saw the game out as Laranjo hit a pair of threes and Riley Record (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) added a three as well. Keuka outscored Wells 17-8 in the final quarter to defeat the Express 60-28 on Wednesday.

KC Notes:

  • The Wolves extended their winning streak over the Express to five games. Keuka College is 19-5 against Wells all-time. The two schools first met on the hardwood in the 1974-75 season
  • Keuka is now 605-395 in program history following their 1,000th game
  • Riley Record had a good all-around game for the Green and Gold. The junior finished with seven points, four rebounds, four assists, and four steals
  • Sam Laranjo surpassed 800 points for her career
  • The win was the 47th in the career of Head Coach Gary Broadhurst, tying Katie Marcella for fifth on the career wins list
