No. 10 UW-Whitewater Pitches Third-Quarter Shutout in Win

The No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team built on a double-digit halftime lead by holding UW-River Falls without a point for more than 15 minutes during a 73-41 victory in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in River Falls, Wis.

The Warhawks (13-1 overall, 3-0 WIAC), who extended their win streak to 11 games, forced the Falcons to miss all 12 of their shots and commit 10 turnovers while shooting 52.6 percent on the other end in the third quarter for a 23-0 advantage in the period.

UW-Whitewater hadn't shut out an opponent in any quarter since the four-quarter format was instituted prior to the 2015-16 season, allowing as few as two in the first quarter of a win over Beloit on Nov. 18, 2017, and in the third quarter of a victory over Methodist (N.C.) on Dec. 29, 2018.

Freshman forward Aleah Grundahl led a group of four Warhawks in double figures with 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Sophomore guard Veronica Kieres tallied 12 points and six rebounds.

Senior guard Becky Raeder and junior guard Rebekah Schumacher posted 10 points apiece. Raeder recorded five rebounds and two steals, and Schumacher collected four rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Junior center Johanna Taylor grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and added five points and two assists.

The Warhawks shot 44.3 percent from the floor and held the Falcons (4-9, 0-3) to 26.9 percent shooting while forcing 22 turnovers that led to 27 points.

UW-Whitewater jumped out to a 12-0 lead after back-to-back buckets by Raeder, including a layup with 5:54 left in the first quarter. UW-River Falls got on the board 10 seconds later, and closed to within six by the end of the period.

The Falcons closed to within five midway through the second, but the Warhawks closed the quarter on an 8-0 run, including four points from Grundahl, to head into halftime with a 30-17 advantage.

UW-Whitewater built its lead to 53-17 by the end of the third quarter as Kieres registered 10 points in the frame, including six in a row during one span and four straight to end it.

UW-River Falls scored 18 seconds into the fourth quarter to end the UW-W run, which closed at 33-0 over a stretch of 15 minutes, 36 seconds from the 5:18 mark of the second to the 9:42 mark of the fourth.

The Warhawks sustained the advantage during the fourth for their third conference win of the year.
