Nor'easters notch 62-53 win over Bears

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Jocelyn Chaput led three players in double figures as the University of New England chalked up a 62-53 women's basketball victory over Bridgewater State University on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 18) as the final day of the Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament began at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Nor'easters (2-2) logged an 11-1 run to end the 3rd quarter and start the 4th, separating from a 39-39 contest. The Bears (0-3) trimmed the gap to five on a couple of occasions down the stretch, but could not get any closer.

UNE surged out to a 13-4 cushion in the 1st, with all five starters contributing to the offense. The spread was still nine (19-10) early in the 2nd, before Bridgewater State rattled off a 15-2 spurt and took a 25-21 edge. Nicole Bostick registered all of her eight points in the span, while Olivia DelGrosso accounted for the other seven. However, the hosts posted seven of the last eight heading into the half to go up, 32-26, and never trailed again. Allie Goodmantallied six of those points for the Nor'easters.

Chaput went for 16 points, four assists, and four steals on her way to All-Tournament Team status for the weekend. Abby Cavallaro chipped in with three triples and 13 points, and Ashley Coneys had 11 points to go with four steals. Goodman finished with nine points and Sadie Nelson had eight, along with a team-high seven rebounds.

UNE forced 29 BSU turnovers on the day and scored 19 going to the opposite direction; the Bears only recorded seven points when the Nor'easters lost possession.

DelGrosso matched the game-best of 16 points to pace Bridgewater State, and netted a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Kayla Carter totaled 11 points and seven boards, and Kailyn Aguiar put up 10 points as well as a contest-high nine rebounds.

Later in the afternoon, Connecticut College led from start-to-finish and defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute by a 55-44 margin for the title. Most Valuable Player Sami Ashton guided the Camels (2-0), with the aid of All-Tournament selection Meggie Corcoran; Spencer Vinson and McKenna Finken joined the group representing the Engineers (3-1).
