Cortland Women Edged at Oneonta on Late Basket

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Alexa Amalbert scored the tiebreaking layup with 26 seconds remaining as Oneonta remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 54-50 win over visiting Cortland.
 
Amalbert finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists, Leanne Corso had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Madeline Frank added nine points, 12 board and three assists for Oneonta, which improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.
 
Cortland (5-6, 1-4 SUNYAC) was led by Kristy Vitucci's (Deer Park) 15 points and eight rebounds. She was 4-of-10 from 3-point range, including a tying 3-pointer with 41 seconds remaining. Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) registered 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals, Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) added eight points and five rebounds, and Meghan Flanagan (Rochester/Brighton) grabbed seven rebounds for the Red Dragons.
 
Cortland led 47-46 on a Flanagan put-back with 2:43 left. Corso hit two foul shots about a minute later to put Oneonta up by one, and her layup with 1:01 left extended the lead to three.
 
Oneonta called timeout following Vitucci's tying 3-pointer and Amalbert hit a driving layup on the right side to put the hosts up by two. Vitucci missed a contested driving layup with 17 seconds left and Corson sank two more free throws with 16 seconds remaining to help seal the victory.
 
Cortland led 14-8 after one quarter, but Oneonta came back and tied the game at 24 heading into halftime. Cortland led 31-30 with 6:45 left in the third and, despite scoring only one more point the rest of the period, only trailed 35-32 entering the fourth quarter. Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way until the final two Oneonta foul shots.
 
Both teams shot an identical 18-of-65 (28 percent) from the field. Cortland hit eight 3-pointers compared to Oneonta's four, but the hosts were 14-of-15 from the foul line compared to Cortland's 6-of-9 effort.
 
Cortland will host Oswego Saturday at 2 p.m.
