The Oglethorpe women's basketball team closed out its Quality Suites Holiday Classic with a comprehensive 73-48 victory over Calvin Friday afternoon at Dorough Field House. The Stormy Petrels outplayed the Knights in every phase of the game and improved to 9-2 on the season as a result.

The Petrels got several outstanding performances to help themselves to victory. Sophomore center Savannah LeGate poured in 23 points on 11-of-22 shooting while grabbing 16 rebounds, nine of the offensive variety. Freshman guard Hailey Higashi obliterated her previous career high, scoring 18 points on 5-of-6 from long distance and 3-of-4 from the stripe.

Senior guard Bailey Charles earned a spot on the all-classic team with her 12 points on Friday. Combined with her 17 on Thursday, she scored 29 over the two games. Against Calvin, she sank 5 of 10 from the field overall and 2 of 4 from 3-point range while also grabbing nine boards and passing out four assists.

The Petrels shot the ball better than in their previous three games, converting at a 36.3 percent rate from the field. That included a 32.3 percent mark from distance on the day. Oglethorpe dominated on the glass, outrebounding the visiting Knights 56-37 overall and 24-10 offensively.

Oglethorpe built a huge advantage in the first half. They outscored Calvin 21-15 in the opening quarter, then used a 14-4 run over the final 8:15 of the period to take a 37-21 lead into the break. The home side outscored the Knights 16-6 over the course of the second quarter.

Calvin never worked their way back into the game after that, as the Petrels outscored them over both the third and fourth quarters, as well. That included a 21-14 Oglethorpe advantage in the fourth.

"I'm proud of our group for responding after a loss," said Oglethorpe head coach Alex Richey. "It felt like that was our best collective game of the season, and now we have time to enjoy friends and family for the holidays and head into that break on a very positive note."

The Petrels return to action on Saturday, Dec. 29, when they welcome North Park to Dorough Field House at 3 p.m. That will serve as both the final game of 2018 and the final non-conference game of the regular season for the team.
