Kenedy Schoonveld ripped down the rebound, pivoted and started heading up court.

Within a few dribbles, the Hope College guard heaved a two-handed pass to a streaking teammate from nearly free-throw line to free-throw line. Lauren Newman caught the ball in stride, took one step and made an off-balance layup while being fouled.

The fast-break basket in the closing seconds of the first quarter capped a high-octane start for the second-ranked Flying Dutch, who beat Adrian College 88-50 in their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener on Wednesday.

Hope (4-0 overall, 1-0 MIAA) never looked back after building a 27-15 lead during the opening 10 minutes.

Head coach Brian Morehouse said Hope team has focused on improving its transition game.

"We have a number of players who could handle the ball right now," Morehouse said. "Our players are running harder. We have really emphasized in practice this year to do a better job of running harder. I think we are getting what we are emphasizing."

The Flying Dutch outscored Adrian 12-0 in fast-break points.
