BUFFALO, N.Y — Five players were in double figures for Keuka College as the Women's Basketball team defeated Medaille College 72-53 on the road on Thursday night.

Guard Sam Laranjo (Averill Park, N.Y. / Averill Park) led the way with 13 points for Keuka College (1-0). The junior added nine assists, seven rebounds, and five steals for the Wolves. Lauren Anten (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) and Jariah Johnson (New York, N.Y. / Frederick Douglas) each finished with 12 points while Arianna DeNault (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker) and Amelia Poole (Bloomfield, N.Y. / Bloomfield) each added 11 points in the win.

Keuka College 72 at Medaille College 53

Medaille opened a 10-5 lead over the Wolves in the opening quarter. Five free throws for the Wolves tied the game at 10-10 with two minutes left in the quarter. The game would remain tied, 12-12, at the end of the first quarter.

A steal by Abby Hess (Cortland, N.Y. / Cortland) opened the second quarter and led to a transition layup by Arianna DeNault to give the Wolves a 14-12 lead. The Green and Gold would slowly build a lead in the quarter. Keuka held a 12-4 advantage in the first half. The Mavericks cut the lead to two in the final minute, but freshman Amelia Poole knocked down the first three pointer of her career in the closing seconds to give the Wolves a 30-25 halftime lead.

The Wolves came out running in the third quarter. A pull-up jumper by Sam Laranjo pushed the Wolves lead to 42-32 midway through the third, forcing the Mavericks to call a timeout. The Green and Gold would close the third strong as well. Jariah Johnson made a driving layup with a minute left. She then stole the ball and found a streaking Poole in the lane for a layup. Johnson then closed the quarter with a jumper in the paint as the Wolves led 56-38 after three quarters.

Keuka College would close it out in the fourth quarter. They led by as many as 28 in the quarter as the Wolves continued onto the 72-53 season opening victory.

Up Next for Keuka College: Keuka College heads to Boston this weekend to play in a tipoff tournament at Emerson College. The opening game will be a matchup between two teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last season as the Wolves will face UMass-Boston on Saturday afternoon.
