No. 15 Warhawk Women Hold Off UW-Stout

The No. 15 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team ended its game at UW-Stout Saturday with a 15-4 run to post a 76-67 triumph in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Menomonie, Wis.

 

After leading by as many as 11 in the second half, the Warhawks (13-2 overall, 3-1 WIAC) trailed 63-61 four minutes into the fourth quarter before the team's three seniors – guards Malia Smith, Brooke Trewyn and forward Andrea Meinert – combined for 12 of the team's final 15 points.

 

Meinert hit a jumper to tie the game with 4:19 remaining, and Smith gave UW-Whitewater the lead for good with a free throw at the 2:13 mark.

 

Trewyn converted a layup on the next possession to increase the lead to three, and Meinert converted a 3-point play 30 seconds later to make it 69-63 with 1:23 on the clock.

 

After a free throw by the Blue Devils (7-8, 0-4), junior forward Olivia Freckmann tallied a 3-point play to increase the lead to eight with 49 seconds to go.

 

Trewyn, who finished with a team-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds, four steals and two blocks, hit four free throws over the final 26 seconds of regulation to ice the contest.

 

Meinert collected 13 points and five rebounds, and Smith posted 11 points. Freckmann, junior forwards Becky Deichl and Sarah Schumacher tallied eight points apiece. Freckmann added a game-high 10 rebounds.

 

The Warhawks held UW-Stout to 37.3 percent shooting, including a 32.1 percent clip in the first half. UW-Whitewater hit 15-of-21 from the free-throw line, including 12-of-16 in the second half, and capitalized on 17 Blue Devil turnovers with 16 points off the miscues.

 

The two teams traded baskets over the first seven minutes of the first quarter before the Warhawks scored six straight over the final 1:57 of the period to take a 16-10 advantage.

 

UW-Whitewater extended its lead to nine at the 7:58 mark of the second, and pushed its lead all the way to 14 in the waning moments of the quarter before UW-Stout knocked down a 3-pointer to draw within 37-26 at halftime.

 

The Warhawks held at least a two-possession advantage until the 1:55 mark of the third quarter, when the Blue Devils drew to within one. Sophomore guard Camri Conley hit a pair of free throws with 35 seconds left to give UW-Whitewater a 55-52 lead entering the fourth.

 

UW-Stout took its first lead of the half at 56-55 with 9:02 remaining. Each time the Blue Devils took the lead over the next four minutes, the Warhawks responded to tie the contest.

 

UW-Whitewater continues its road swing Wednesday at UW-Stevens Point. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. in Stevens Point, Wis.
