Lafko, Boring lead SVC to victory over Thiel

Jenna Lafko and Taylor Boring combined for 9 three-pointers, leading Saint Vincent to a 78-51 victory over visiting Thiel College.

Lafko had her first career double-double, with 16 points and 10 assists, while Boring connected on five shots from outside the arc, all in the second half, for a 15-point performance.

With the win, SVC improves to 5-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, 8-6 overall, while Thiel drops to 2-5 in the conference, 3-10 overall.

A three pointer by Carlee Kilgus gave SVC an 11-7 lead late in the first quarter, but the Tomcats scored nine straight points to take a 16-11 lead with 6:05 remaining in the half.  That's when Lafko took control of the game hitting back-to-back threes to give the Bearcats a one-point lead. She then assisted on scores from Paige MontroseErin Giancola and then Montrose again, as SVC built its lead.  After a three by Maria Morgan, Lafko hit another three, giving SVC a 30-17 lead, concluding a 19-1 run.  The Tomcats hit a three near the end of the second quarter, making it 30-20 at the half.

Lafko started the second half with a basket, then added two more threes in the third quarter, running the lead to 47-30 with 1:20 left.

The fourth quarter belonged to Boring, as she hit back-to-back threes to make the score 64-38 with 3:59 remaining.  She later hit another pair of threes to make it 73-46, as the Bearcats cruised to the win.

Bri Van Volkenburg led the Bearcats on the boards with 7 rebounds, while Mara Benvenuti had 6.  Babette Sanmartin had 5 steals, while Montrose had four.  

Jess Vormelker had a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for Thiel.

The Bearcats will travel to New Wilmington to face Westminster College on Saturday at 4PM.
