UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The No. 24 ranked Marietta College women's basketball team stayed perfect on the season with a 73-62 win at John Carroll University Saturday (Dec. 9) afternoon. The Pioneers are 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll slips to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the OAC.

"Anytime we can get a win on the road we are happy with the result," Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. "John Carroll is much better than their record, and today our defensive pressure and maturity down the stretch were the deciding factors."

Marietta is one win away from equaling the best start in program history. The 1985-86 and 1989-90 squads each started their respective seasons 8-0.

Trailing 19-18 after the first quarter, the Pioneers held John Carroll to just five points in the second period and led 37-24 at halftime. Marietta never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 17 points late in the third quarter.

Amisha Herd scored 15 points and had four assists and five steals. Corrie Burkhardt recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Marlo Taylor chipped in with a career=high 10 points.

"It seems like we always have someone on our bench stepping up during big moments," Vivian said. "Today that was Marlo (Taylor) coming in and hitting some big shots for us. Corrie (Burkhardt) was making huge plays for us all day."

Chelbi Graham and Nicole Heffington each had double-doubles for JCU. Graham finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Heffington had 15 points and 10 boards. Dani Carlson added 11 points.

For the game, Marietta shot 37.9% (25-of-66) from the floor, 21.1% (4-of-19) from three-point range and 61.3% (19-of-31) from the line. The Blue Streaks were 22-of-51 (43.1%) from the floor, 7-of-22 (31.8%) behind the arc and 11-of-19 (57.9%) at the line.

John Carroll edged the Pioneers on the glass, 40-38. Marietta turned the ball over 16 times, while the Blue Streaks committed 27 turnovers.

Marietta returns home to host Wilmington College next Saturday (Dec. 16). Tip off is set for 3 p.m. in Ban Johnson Arena.
