ALBION, Mich. – A couple of second half scoring droughts kept Albion College from springing an upset of fourth-ranked Hope College at Kresge Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Madison Geers scored six of her nine points in the final 3 ½ minutes as the Flying Dutch escaped with a 62-59 victory.

Albion's press defense forced 21 turnovers, including 10 in the first quarter as the Britons gained a 19-15 lead.

The Britons went on to lead, 32-29, at halftime.

Albion led by as many as five early in the third quarter, but the Britons went four minutes without scoring in falling behind, 40-36.

Maija Gillum scored a pair of baskets to give Albion its final lead of the day – 44-40 with a minute left in the third quarter.

"It was such a hard fought game. It would have been nice to win one here at home," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "We tried to play fast with them because it's hard to play with them in the half court. They figured out how to beat the pressure in the second half."

Hope went on a 9-0 run, scoring the last four points of the third quarter and the first five in the fourth.

The Britons had a couple of possessions to regain the lead in the fourth quarter, but were unable to knock down shots.

Emily Bernas was one of three Britons to score in double figures with 15. Evelyn Wischmeyer and Rain Hinton added 13 and 11, respectively.

Hope's Francesca Buchanan led all players with 16 points.

Albion (5-1 overall, 1-1 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) travels to Olivet College for a league game Wednesday night.
