Rowan Women's Basketball Drops 73-62 Decision To Albright

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team was defeated by visiting Albright College, 73-62 on Monday night.

 

The Profs fell to 2-3 overall while the Lions even their record at 2-2. Guard/forward Alysha Lofton (sr. Warrington, NJ/Central Bucks S.) posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Albright. Forward/center Devan Horka (sr. Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) produced 16 points, nine boards and five assists. Guards Nina Mazzarelli (sr. West Chester, PA/West Chester E.) and Jane Joyce (sr. Scranton, PA/West Scranton) tallied 15 and 14 points respectively. Joyce also grabbed seven rebounds. The Lions won the rebound battle by a 44-31 margin and never trailed during the contest.

 

Rowan center April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) registered a game-high 17 points and added eight boards. Guard/forward Alex Raring (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) totaled 14 points. Guard Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) and forward Taylor Gardner (fr. Plainfield, NJ/Union Catholic) contributed with eight points apiece.

 

Joyce began the game with a three-pointer (9:44) then Lofton stole the ball and made a layup (9:29) for a quick 5-0 Albright lead. Raring's lay-in (6:48) closed the gap to two (9-7). The Lions followed with a 9-1 run, putting them up 18-8 (1:17). Four different players scored in the stretch. Albright ended the period with an 18-12 advantage. The Lions scored eight of the first 10 points of the second quarter to increase their lead to 12 (26-14) with 6:44 on the clock. Mazzarelli recorded seven points. The Profs were able to cut the deficit to seven (38-31) by the intermission. Raring totaled 12 points in the half and Mazzarelli had 11.

 

Albright started the third stanza with an 8-2 rally to go ahead by 13 (46-33) with 6:32 to go. Horka had four points followed by Mazzarelli and Lofton with two apiece. Guards Juliette Tobin (fr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford Twp.) (5:06) and Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) (4:10) drilled back-to-back threes and Rowan trailed by eight (49-41). The Lions went on a 7-0 surge for a 56-41 lead (0:56) and ended the period with a 12-point cushion (56-44). The Profs could not catch up in the fourth and Albright had its largest lead at 65-49 (3:12). Rowan came within eight (65-57) with 2:13 to go but the Lions put the game away with a 7-0 run that ended with 25 seconds remaining.

 

Next, the women's basketball team hosts conference foe Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 8 p.m.
