Several big outputs send Grinnell women to win over Kansas Christian

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's women's basketball team got career days from several players on its way to a 67-41 victory over Kansas Christian College Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

 

Kayla Morrissey '18 poured in 24 points to boost her career total to 1,078, eighth-best in program history. She was honored by coach Dana Harrold after the contest with the presentation of a commemorative basketball.

 

Morrissey also had seven rebounds, as did Abby Hellweg '19 and Daria Guzzo '19. That was a career-high total for the latter two.

 

Regan Kasprak '19 and Claire Collier '21 each had eight points, with that total being a career-best for Collier. Kasprak, Collier and Margaret Giles '18 all had a career-high three assists, while Giles had a career-high four blocks.

 

Coming up with career-highs for steals were Kasprak with four and Collier and Tyria Heath '21 with three each. As a team, Grinnell forced 32 turnovers with the aid of 15 steals.

 

The Pioneers fell behind 11-7 in the first period before rallying with an 8-0 run. Morrissey began things with a jumper, Heath hit two free throws, Collier had a jumper and Morrissey a layup to make it 16-11 after one frame.

 

Grinnell led by just one in the second period before another big run gave the hosts a large cushion. Morrissey had a free throw, Collier a layup, Morrissey a free throw and two baskets and Giles a jumper to make it 32-21 at halftime.

 

The Pioneers continued to cruise while improving to 2-2 on the season. The Falcons fell to 0-6.

 

The Pioneers close out their non-conference slate Tuesday when Iowa Wesleyan University visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m.
