GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A big 16-3 run to close out the first half helped Gwynedd Mercy take down Penn State-Harrisburg, 61-50, in the first game of the Griffin's Tip-off Tournament.

GMercyU moves on to the championship game tomorrow where they'll take on Haverford, who were 59-52 winners over Sage in the day's other contest, with a 2 p.m. tip. The Lions and Gators will battle it out in the consolation game starting at noon.

Rookie Rebecca Fuhrer came off the bench to score 13 points while knocking down a trifecta of three-pointers and Bianca Adams kicked in six of her 12 points in the fourth quarter. Despite a tough shooting day, as Gwynedd shot 25.4% from the floor, the team got it done at the free-throw line, hitting 21-of-25 attempts which helped the cause. The Lions hit just 14-of-25 from the charity stripe.

Points were at a premium in the first quarter, which had both a total of five field goals. The Griffins fell behind 4-0 early in the period, but were able to get to a 9-9 score after 10 minutes.

Trailing 16-13 in the latter parts of the second, Adams connected on the first of her three treys to kickstart a scoring run that put Gwynedd in control. Larissa Leyes added two off a steal and layup and would later hit a big triple right before the buzzer to give GMercyU a big 28-19 lead at the break.

Adams again hit from downtown early in the third quarter to give Gwynedd its first double-digit lead (32-22). The team rode the momentum to build a 43-30 edge after three. Katelyn Kosovac pulled the Lions within 48-39 with her three-pointer with just over six minutes to play, but Adams saved her best three for last, which gave the Griffins their largest lead of the contest (53-39) and more importantly, restoring that double-figure lead.

Jada Pettis had 15 points and 13 rebounds while teammate Janel Brown registered 14 points and 13 boards for Penn State (1-1).

Leyes finished the day with seven points and three assists. Sydney Thompson contributed seven points, five caroms, four steals, and a pair of assists. The Griffins (2-0) took advantage of 27 Lion turnovers, converting them into 24 points.
