Cortland Women Lose at #18 Geneseo; Red Dragons to Host Fredonia in SUNYAC First Round Tuesday

GENESEO, N.Y. – Cortland fell behind 13-0 to start the game and never recovered as the Red Dragons lost at unbeaten and nationally 18th-ranked Geneseo, 74-39, in SUNYAC women's basketball action.

Cortland closes the regular season 12-13 overall and 11-7 in league play. The Red Dragons will be the fourth seed in the six-team SUNYAC playoffs and will host fifth-seeded Fredonia in a first-round game Tuesday night (tentative start time 7:30 p.m.). Geneseo completed a perfect regular season at 25-0 (18-0 SUNYAC), and as the top seed will host the SUNYAC semifinals and finals next Friday and Saturday.

Kara Houppert led a balanced Geneseo attack with 13 points and four assists. Katie Durand, Kayleigh Cavanaugh and Kelsey Poplawski each scored 12 points. Durand and Bridgit Ryan each grabbed six rebounds, while Durand and Ryan shared the team lead with Houppert with four each. Cavanaugh led the Knights with five steals.

Alyssa Crosby (Brier Hill/Hammond) led Cortland with 10 points and six rebounds. She hit 4-of-9 shots from the field. Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored seven points in 18 minutes off the bench, with her sister Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) adding six points and five rebounds. Samantha Roberts (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) paced the team with four assists.

Geneseo took its 13-0 lead in the game's first five and a half minutes and held Cortland off the scoreboard until a Crosby basket with 3:42 left in the quarter. The Knights led 16-4 after the first and 27-14 at halftime. Cortland shot 38 percent (6-of-16) in the first half compared to Geneseo's 33 percent (9-of-27), but the Red Dragons committed 17 first-half turnovers to Geneseo's seven.

The hosts extended their lead to as much as 29 points in the third quarter and as high as 39 in the fourth. Cortland finished with 24 turnovers, leading to Geneseo's 25-8 advantage in points off of turnovers, and the Knights outscored the Red Dragons 21-4 on the foul line.
