(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team dropped a home contest to New York University, 66-51, on Sunday, February 12. The Tartans are now 16-6 overall and 5-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Violets improve to 13-9 and 3-8.
Senior Lisa Murphy recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 16 points and 19 rebounds. The senior also blocked six shots. Freshman Makayla Filiere scored 15 points to go with four steals while senior Jackie Hudepohl contributed 10 points and five assists.
NYU held a 12-11 first-quarter lead after slow starts by both teams. The Tartans shot 4-of-11 for the frame while the Violets were 5-of-13.
The Tartans scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take an 18-12 lead with the last bucket coming via Murphy on a fastbreak off an assist by Hudepohl. The Violets answered with a 10-3 run to take back the lead on a jumper by Kayla Patterson with 5:34 to go.
The Violets didn't lose that lead and held a 33-25 halftime lead. Murphy and Hudepohl each had seven points for the Tartans while Amy Harioka hit three from long range to lead the Violets with nine points at the break.
The Tartans cut the deficit to three points, 35-32, with 5:29 to go in the third quarter with a 10-2 run closing on a baseline jumper by Filiere. After New York called a timeout, the Violets scored seven straight to put their lead in double digits, 42-32, for the first time.
The Tartans struggled from the field in the third, making just 4-of-16 attempts, and found themselves down 48-34 heading into the fourth.
A 9-2 run to start the final quarter brought the home team to within seven points but the Violets responded with four points on the next possession thanks to an offensive rebound following a missed free throw.
The Tartans did pull it under double digits again when freshman Megan Jaeb sank two from the foul line with 4:07 to play to make it 57-49.
From there, the Violets ended the game with a 9-2 run for the 66-51 final score.
The Tartans shot 30.0% for the game while the Violets knocked down 41.7% and 7-of-14 from behind the arc. Harioka finished with 15 points to lead the team while Lauren Brown scored 14 off the bench.
The Tartans head to the road for the remainder of the regular season and will next face the University of Rochester (15-7, 6-5) on Friday, February 17 at 6:00 p.m.
