Lakers handle Bears

Oswego scored early and often during the first 10 minutes of the contest with a 19-6 scoring effort. Sophomore guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) and freshman guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) each hit 3-pointers for the Bears, while Mary Mazzella scored five points to lead the Lakers. 

Play evened out in the second quarter with Oswego holding the 12-10 advantage, but Oswego was in full control of the lead at the half with a 31-16 score. Sophomore forward Victoria Shopovick (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) tallied four points of Potsdam's 10 total with three fellow Bears chipping in. Alison Nunizato tacked five points and Zana Dillard added four toward the Lakers lead.

The third quarter was full of scoring from both sides and Potsdam benefitted from Laker fouls. The Bears got most of their scoring from free throw line by going 8-for-10. Six different Bears kicked in toward their 17 point quarter. Windhausen scored eight of her 11 points during the 10 minutes of play, while Heather Hebert pitched in seven points. Oswego took the 56-33 lead into the final quarter.

The Lakers' offense didn't slow in the fourth and added another 15 points to their lead for the 71-42 victory. Drew and LaPage each drained a shot from behind the arch, while Dorgler added two points and freshman forward Kim Pike (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) hit 1-of-2 from the foul line.

Senior captain Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y./Troy) had a team-high six rebounds and tallied six points. Dorgler, Drew and Pike chipped in six points each.

Hebert led the Lakers with 13 points, three steals, four rebounds and two assists and Nunizato finished behind her with 12 points and seven boards. Mazzella and Courtney Ameele each kicked in 11 points, while Mazzella added seven rebounds. Quincey Zimmerman tied Windhausen with a game-high 10 boards.

Potsdam will battle SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 4 p.m.
