Brockport Women Defeat Cortland in OT, 66-57

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Brockport's Schyler Laux hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 32 seconds left in regulation and the Golden Eagles scored the first nine points of overtime on the way to a 66-57 win at Cortland in SUNYAC women's basketball action.

Hannah Rehbaum led Brockport (7-13, 6-7 SUNYAC) with 15 points, 14 rebounds and three assists. Olivia LeBaron hit 4-of-6 shots from the 3-point arc and finished with 12 points and three assists. Emily Nestler ended with nine points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and five steals, and Laux made three 3-pointers and finished with nine points.

Cortland (8-11, 7-5 SUNYAC) was led by Cassidy Chapko's (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) 19 points and five assists. Stephanie Rice (Duanesburg) scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds and Alyssa Crosby (Brier Hill/Hammond) rang up 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) shared the team lead with eight rebounds and Taylor Miller (Freeport) matched her career high with five steals.

Brockport led 22-20 at halftime and 33-30 after three quarters. The Golden Eagles used an 8-0 run early in the fourth, including 3-pointers by Laux and LeBaron, and took their largest lead at 41-31 with eight minutes left in regulation.

Cortland, however, scored the next eight points on a Rice jumper, a Miller 3-pointer, a Kerry McHugh (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) layup and a Chapko free throw, and trailed 41-39 with 5:21 remaining. The Red Dragons eventually took the lead at 46-45 on a Rice layup with 2:44 left, and led by three at 51-48 on shots by Rice at the 1:33 mark and Crosby with 47 seconds on the clock.

Laux buried a trey to knot the game with less than 32 second left. Cortland tried to work for basically the last shot of regulation, but was called for a travel with five seconds left. Brockport inbounded in the backcourt but elected to hold the ball and the game went to overtime.

In the extra five-minute session, Brockport jumped out quickly with a Faith Welch layup, two baskets by Rehbaum, and a LeBaron 3-pointer to lead 60-51 with 1:44 left. Cortland answered with two Miller free throws with 1:26 left, a Chapko free throw eight seconds later after a Brockport turnover, and, after another turnover, a Rice 3-pointer with 1:01 left that made it a three-point game. Brockport, however, scored the game's final six points from the foul line, four by Bailey Pratt.

Cortland finished at 30 percent from the field, including just 1-of-11 in overtime, and hit only 4-of-24 3-pointers. Brockport shot 40 percent overall and 50 percent (10-of-20) from the 3-point arc.
