New Paltz Women’s Basketball Takes Home 72-64 SUNYAC Win Over Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Senior guard/forward Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) and senior guard/forward Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) each recorded a double-double in the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team's 72-64 victory over SUNY Fredonia on Friday evening.

Small tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds while Roessler turned in 16 points off the bench and pulled down 11 rebounds for the night, converting a combined 15-of-21 shots from the foul line. Sophomore Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Ursuline School) and freshman forward Paige Niemeyer (North Chatham, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) both scored double-digit points for New Paltz, recording 15 points and 10 points, respectively.

Senior guard Alexis Cheatham paced the Blue Devils with 16 points of her own while sophomore forward Sarah Sweazy collected 14 points. Sophomore forward Jenna Einink recorded a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds while junior guard/forward Jacque Law also chipped in 12 points for Fredonia.

New Paltz jumped out to a 23-16 margin at the end of the first period but the Blue Devils hit their stride in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 29-25 at the 5:19 mark. However the Hawks would push an 8-4 run to conclude the half with a 37-29 lead.

Coming out of the break Fredonia outscored the Hawks 22-6 in the third stanza. The Blue Devils quickly closed the gap to 37-36 before pushing a 4-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the game. Fredonia remained ahead for the rest of the period but were able to bring the score within five (51-46) heading into the final period.

As time ran down on the clock, New Paltz worked its way to a two point deficit (61-59) with 4:28 remaining before taking hold of the lead once again thanks to a 3-point shot by freshman guard Marion Dietz (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill). Fredonia managed to tie the score to 63-all with under a minute left but New Paltz once again took the lead off a jumper from Bettke. The Hawks would convert 6-of-8 free throw shots in the final seconds of the game to secure the 72-64 victory.

New Paltz improves to 8-7, 5-4 SUNYAC and will face conference foe Buffalo State tomorrow at 4 p.m.
