Hawks Knock Off Stevens to Stay Unbeaten in E8

           ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick (7-5) snapped a five-game winless streak against Stevens (3-7, 2-1 E8) on Tuesday night taking a 56-40 victory over the Ducks for a 4-0 start to its Empire 8 campaign. The Hawks only trailed for a 2:36 span very early in the first quarter and led the rest of the way in the victory.

            Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) poured in a game-high 18 points to pace the Hawks. She also hit four first-half three-pointers. Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) added 10 points, seven boards, and a pair of threes, and Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) and Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) each registered eight points. Foreman also tied for a game-high with 11 rebounds.
            After a quick Stevens' lead to start the game, the Hawks jumped in front 4-3 on a Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) layup at the 7:10 mark. They led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter before settling on a 29-18 advantage at the break. The Hawks would shoot 6-of-12 from three-point range in the first half, which included the four treys from Johnson as she netted 14 points in the opening 20 minutes.
            Both teams turned the ball over 11 times in the first half, but the Hawks would convert the Ducks' miscues into 11 points compared to just four points off turnovers for the visitors.
            Hartwick built leads of 15 points twice in the third quarter and led by at least 10 for the entire period as it led by a margin of 45-33 heading into the final stanza. The Ducks cut their deficit to 10 points, 47-37, with 6:07 left in the game, but it would be as close as they would get. The Hawks would score the next nine points over a 2:37 span for a 19-point lead to put the game away. 

            The Hawks would finish the game hitting nine of their 19 shots from three-point range for a season-high percentage of .474. From the floor, they made 37.9% (22-for-58) of their shots while holding Stevens to just 23.2% (16-for-69). The Ducks were only able to connect on three of their 27 three-point attempts (11%) on the night. Tonight's win marks the fourth consecutive game that the Hawks have held their opponents to under 30% shooting.
            Johnson made seven of her 12 shots from the floor in the game. She added four rebounds, and three assists. Stone dished out a game-high five assists and added four rebounds. Courtney Cirillo (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) contributed five points, four rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots. LeeAnne Green (Windsor, CT/Watkinson School) chipped in four points and six boards for 'Wick.
            The Hawks, who move to 11-12 against the Ducks all-time, held reigning Empire 8 Player of the Year Kaitlyn Astel to just 12 points on the night, seven below her season average. She would add 11 rebounds, a game-high five steals, and two assists. Anna Toke posted eight points and seven rebounds for the Ducks.
            Hartwick remains at home through the weekend as it looks to continue its four-game win streak. The Hawks host Alfred on Friday night at 6 p.m. and Houghton Saturday at 2 p.m. in a pair of Empire 8 contests.
