No. 7 Hope Women's Basketball Tops Centre, Rebounds From First Loss

The Hope College women's basketball team downed Centre, Kentucky 70-31 behind a stingy defense and balanced effort on Friday at the Bluffton, Ohio Holiday Tournament.

The seventh-ranked Flying Dutch rebounded from their first loss of the season on Thursday with six players scoring at least seven points and with a defense that held Centre to single-digits in three of four quarters.

Hope (12-1) received 10 points apiece from senior forward Allison Hedrick of Naperville, Illinois (Neuqua Valley HS) and sophomore forward Francesca Buchanan of Grant, Michigan (Sparta HS).

Hedrick also contributed six rebounds and four assists off the bench.

All-tournament selection Mandy Traversa of Winfield, Illinois (Wheaton North) added nine points. The senior forward pulled a game-high seven rebounds.

Junior guards Madison Geers of Scottville, Michigan (Mason County Central) and Tyra Smith of Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) each scored eight points.

Senior guard Paris Madison of Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) dished out seven assists and netted seven points. Hope's starters combined for 42 points.

The Flying Dutch never trailed after scoring the game's first nine points. They led 19-5 after the first quarter.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 at home against Kalamazoo. Tipoff is 3 p.m.
