Taylor and second chance points too much to overcome as Sewanee falls to Muskingum

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 29, 2016)  Mallory Taylor finished with a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double and Muskingum grabbed 20 offensive rebounds which led to 19 second-chance points as the visiting Muskies topped the Sewanee women's basketball team 88-77, Thursday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

Along with Taylor, Muskingum starters Olivia Besancon added 18 points and Alexandra Carson finished with 12 which helped MU to a 43.1 field goal percentage. Sewanee's offense also played well as the Tigers made 44.8 percent of its attempts.

Sophomore Bella Taylor finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Hannah McCormack pitched in 19 points and five boards alongside Corey Caulder, who finished with 12 points and three rebounds.

Early on, both teams traded scores. The largest lead by either team in the first quarter was only six points when Muskingum scored with 16 seconds left. In fact, the lead changed six times the opening 10 minutes before the Muskies held a three-point advantage, 24-21, heading into the second quarter.

In the second, Muskingum's offense came alive. En route to a 47.4 field goal percentage, the Muskies led by as much as 12 when Mallory Taylor hit a three. That helped MU lead by nine, 47-38, at halftime.

Out of the locker room, Sewanee kept fighting. A three by Taylor and a layup by Sue Kim pulled Sewanee to within four, 47-43, with less than two minutes off the clock. The score remained close until a layup by Stephanie Clark sparked a 19-11 run by Muskingum over the next five minutes. That helped MU lead by 13, 75-62, with 5:27 to play.

From there, Sewanee never got closer than seven points down the stretch.

After two games in two days, the Tigers return to action with a 6:00 p.m. contest against Covenant, Tuesday.
