Alverno Closes Nonconference Slate With Loss

SUPERIOR, Wisconsin -- Alverno College lost its final nonconference contest of the season to host University of Wisconsin-Superior, 85-56, Thursday afternoon inside Mortorelli Gymnasium.

Down by 15 early in the second quarter, the visiting Inferno went on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 31-24. However, the Yellowjackets limited Alverno to a pair of free throws over the final five minutes of the period to lead by 21 at intermission.

The Inferno outscored UW-Superior 16-15 in the third but were unable to close in on the hosts in the fourth quarter.

Gabby Hood led Alverno with 15 points, five steals and three assists while Tessa Mersberger added nine points and Dani Hood chipped in eight. Bailey Buffington led the visitors on the glass with a career-high eight rebounds.

Hailey Kontny (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Bailee Bartunek (10 points, 10 rebounds) each posted double-doubles for the Yellowjackets (9-3) while Hannah Norlin scored 16.

Alverno (2-7) returns home for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game on New Year's Eve versus Edgewood College. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
