UMHB women top Schreiner 83-66

Kerrville, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team used big edges in rebounding and free throw shooting to roll to an 83-66 victory over Schreiner University Tuesday night in Kerrville. The Cru improves to 8-3 on the season with the win. The loss drops the Mountaineers to 1-8 on the year.

Schreiner's only lead of the night came at 5-4 early in the first quarter. UMHB retook the lead almost immediately and took it out to 25-17 at the end of the opening stanza. The Cru scored the opening basket of the second period to push the lead into double figures and UMHB would lead by as many as 19 points before settling for a 45-32 edge at halftime. Schreiner fought back to close to within seven points at 70-63 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Cru closed the game with a 13-3 run to put the game out of reach.

Kendra Wynn topped UMHB with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Antania Newton had 13 points off the bench and Alicia Blackwell added 12 more in a reserve role. Jonelle Smith chipped in 11 points and 11 different players scored for the Cru. UMHB shot 35-49 from the free-throw line and pulled down 16 offensive rebounds as part of a 47-34 edge on the boards. The Cru shot 36 percent from the field as a team, but was just 6-20 from three-point range,

Sabriyyah Fennell led the Mountaineers with 19 points and Codi Simmons added 12 before fouling out. Schreiner shot 37 percent from the field and went 16-24 from the free-throw line. The Mountaineers turned the ball over 19 times in the loss.

The UMHB women will travel to Texas A&M-International for an exhibition game on December 29th. The Cru returns to American Southwest Conference play with a road game at U.T. Tyler on January 5th.
