NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Powered by double-doubles from both starting forwards, Sam Porter and Jessica Daguilh, the10th-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team improved to 7-0 for just the fourth time in program history following a 76-64 conference win over York College of Pennsylvania (5-3, 1-2).  Daguilh posted her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while Porter filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists.

The Captains also improved to 3-0 in league action with the win, and are unbeaten through the team's first seven games for the first time since starting the year 13-0 in 2012-13.

Locked in a tough Capital Athletic Conference matchup for nearly the entirety of the first half, the Captains led by just one point, 38-37, with just 1:14 remaining before the break. In the final minute-plus, Bailey Dufrene buried a triple off a nice feed from Anitra Thomas and Porter knocked down a layup for a quick 5-0 spurt to take a 43-37 lead at the half. The momentum would carry into the second half, as CNU opened the third quarter with a breakout run that saw CNU race out to a 19-point lead.

After halftime, CNU scored 15 of the first 17 points to take control of the action, pulling ahead 58-39 with 5:24 remaining in the third quarter. The 20-2 overall run would prove to be the distance as the Captains never relinquished the double-digit lead.

The patented Christopher Newport team defense was the leader to start the second half, forcing six turnovers in the six minute stretch action. On the offensive end, Daguilh scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the way, while Thomas added a three-pointer off an assist by Dufrene. Junior Makenzie Fancher grabbed a steal and finished on a fast-break, and then went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line to finish out the roll.

Just two minutes later, Porter gave the Captains the largest lead of the night, at 20 points, when she knocked in a three-pointer from the wing to put CNU up 65-45. From that point to the final whistle, CNU withstood a small run by the Spartans and held on for a 12-point win, 76-64.

Anitra Thomas joined Porter and Daguilh among CNU players in double figures, pouring in a season-high and game-high 15 points. She also dished a team-best four assists in the game for the Captains, while connecting on three shots from outside. Daguilh's second straight double-double is the second of her career and the sophomore forward added three blocks and three steals on the defensive end.

CNU's lock-down three-point defense continued to show it's prowess in this one, as the Captains held York to just 3-of-20 from long range (15.0%). Christopher Newport leads the nation in three-point defense through the first seven games this year.

Morgan Kuehne (15 pts) and Katie Wagner (13 pts) led the way for York, while Spartans senior Sam Hruz finished the game with eight points, nine rebounds and five blocks.

The Captains are back in action this Wednesday, December 14 as they play host to North Carolina Wesleyan College in non-conference action. Tip is set for 6:00 pm from the Freeman Center.
