MILWAUKEE -- A strong second half propelled Alverno College to a 60-44 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory over Dominican University Wednesday evening inside Reiman Gymnasium.

Tied after each of the first and second quarters, the Inferno (2-5, 2-1 NACC) capped off the third with a 14-2 run for a 40-29 lead.

The visiting Stars (1-5, 0-2) threatened early in the fourth and cut the deficit to four points, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Mackenzie Mathies bumped the spread back up to 10 and Alverno went on to the 16-point victory.

The Inferno shot 52 percent in the second half after a dismal 27 percent first-half shooting performance. The hosts were also able to overcome a sub-par 13-of-28 showing from the free-throw line in the contest as the scrappy defense forced Dominican into 30 turnovers which led directly to 26 points.

Donna Zehner led the scoring with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and was a rebound shy of her first double-double. Mathies added 15 points while Katelyn Bartlett added nine and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Gabby Hood scored seven and led all with eight assists on the night while Tessa Mersberger made both of her 3-point attempts and chipped in six points. Karli Selear posted a new career-high with five assists as Alverno recorded 19 on 21 made field goals.

Timiya Ray led the Stars with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor including 2-of-3 from long range.

Next up for the Inferno is a league road game at Lakeland University. Saturday's tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
