NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport junior Sam Porter flirted with a triple-double on Saturday afternoon, powering the 11th-ranked women's basketball team to an 81-51 victory over Frostburg State (1-6, 0-2) in Capital Athletic Conference action. With the win, head coach Bill Broderick recorded his 100th career victory at CNU, as the Captains improved to 6-0 overall, 2-0 in league play.

Porter matched her career-high in scoring, with 20 points, and set a new personal best with nine steals. She also hauled in seven rebounds while shooting 8-of-13 from the field to lead the way for the Captains. She led another strong defensive performance for the team as a whole, holding the Bobcats to just 29% shooting (20-69) while forcing 21 turnovers and picking up 15 steals.

The conference matchup featured over 140 shots between the two teams, with Christopher Newport taking a decided edge on the glass. The Captains outrebounded Frostburg State, 65-38, including picking up 30 offensive rebounds. CNU set a new Freeman Center record for team rebounds, and grabbed the most boards in a game since hauling in the same number against Peace on January 20, 2008.

The effort down low was led by junior Devon Byrd and sophomore Jessica Daguilh, each with 11. Daguilh added 12 points for her first career double-double, while also running her consecutive made field goal streak to 12 before finally missing a shot in the second half. Filling the state sheet, Daguilh added three blocks and one steal. Junior Anitra Thomas rounded out the double-figure scoring for CNU, finishing with 10 points with three rebounds.

The Captains struggled to pull away from Frostburg State in the first half, as the visitors closed to within five, 33-28, with two minutes remaining in the second quarter. A quick 10-2 run into the intermission, however, led the Captains to a 13-point lead with momentum heading into the second half. The run would continue, as CNU outscored the Bobcats 28-8 over a 12 minute span to open up a big lead after the third quarter. CNU led by 25 points, taking a 61-36 edge after a dominating third quarter that saw the Captains' defense allow just six points on 2-of-12 shooting.

The Bobcats hit two of their first three shots in the third quarter, but then would hit a drought for the final 8:02 of the frame, as the CNU defense held Frostburg to 0-for-9 shooting in that stretch. In the third, Porter scored seven points with three steals and three rebounds, while Daguilh added four points and four rebounds.

After extending the lead to a game-high 33-point lead late in the fourth quarter, the Captains coasted to their second straight conference victory. Kirsten Rayner had a double-double for the visitors, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Sharyce Warren added 10 points off the bench. The Captains' nationwide leading three-point shooting defense did not take a night off, as FSU managed just one made shot from long range on 17 attempts (5.9%).

CNU dished 20 assists on 30 made field goals, including six from Bailey Dufrene and five by Makenzie Fancher. In the game, the Captains shot 41.7% from the field (30-72).

It is just the fifth time in program history the team has run off six consecutive wins to start the season. The victory moves Coach Broderick's career record at CNU to 100-23, for a winning percentage of over 81%. He is in the early stages of his fifth season at Christopher Newport, and has registered 24 wins or more in three of his first four seasons. He is the fastest coach to reach 100 wins in CNU basketball history, men's or women's.

CNU is off until next Sunday, December 11, as they break for final exams. The Captains will return to action at home against York College of Pennsylvania, who fell to Mary Washington on Saturday, falling to 5-2, 1-1 on the season.
