Alge's Big Night Helps Yeshiva Rally Past York in Home Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Behind Michal Alge's career-high 24 points and 22 rebounds, the Yeshiva University women's basketball team earned an impressive come-from-behind win over York College, 61-53, in the home opener on Tuesday evening at the Pratt ARC. Yeshiva advances to 2-1 to start the season.

The Maccabees trailed by as many as nine in the second half, but would outscore York (0-4) 26-14 in the fourth quarter to earn the key win.

"I am very proud of the team," Yeshiva head coach Michael Alon said. "They played hard and deserved to win."

In the final period, Yeshiva trailed 47-39 with 7:35 left to play in regulation time. A layup by senior forward Tess Blaustein pulled Yeshiva to within six with 7:03 remaining. On the next possession, sophomore guard Avigayil Wiener stole the ball and executed a layup off a fast break to narrow Yeshiva's deficit to four.

With Yeshiva down 49-45, freshman guard Laura Betesh was able to lay the ball up and in while being fouled. She nailed the free throw to complete the three-point play, and pull the Blue and White to within one, with just under five minutes left.

After York committed a personal and technical foul, back-to-back, Betesh successfully converted three out of four free throws to give Yeshiva its first lead since the second quarter, 51-49. After The Cardinals regained the lead, 53-52, Alge took the game over by drawing fouls and hitting a pair of free throws on back-to-back offensive possessions to catapult the Macs to a 56-53 advantage, with 2:56 remaining. The Boston resident followed with a successful jump shot to extend the home team's lead to 58-53 with 2:23 left. The Maccabees held the Cardinals scoreless for the remainder of the contest, clinching a 61-53 win.

Earlier in the game, York scored the first six points of the contest. Yeshiva responded by scoring nine of the game's next 11 points to go up 9-8. The Cardinals regained momentum by going on a 7-3 run to take a 15-12 lead after one quarter of play.

Yeshiva scored the first six points of the second quarter to jump out to an 18-15 advantage. After the Cardinals pulled to within one, Alge nailed a jump shot to put the Maccabees back up by three. Later in the stanza, senior forward Simee Rosner laid the ball up and in off a fast break to make it 24-19 in favor of YU. York scored the last eight points to take a 27-24 lead into halftime.

York outscored Yeshiva by one in the third to take a four-point lead into the fourth.  However, thanks to 14 points off free throws in the final stanza, the Maccabees earned the comeback win.

For the evening, Alge went 14-18 from the charity stripe, while forcing three steals and blocking one shot. Blaustein just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine boards, while dishing out a team-high three assists and adding two steals. Betesh produced 13 points and had two steals, while Rosner grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked four shots. Wiener scored five points, junior guard Andrea Weiss grabbed two rebounds and forced a steal, while senior forward Gavriela Coltonbrought down three boards and blocked one shot.

Yeshiva opens up Skyline play on Tuesday, at St. Joseph's L.I., beginning at 8:00 p.m.
