Madison Geers spent the first week of the Hope College women's basketball team showing she is a defensive stalwart on the court.

The junior forward from Scottville, Michigan (Mason County Central HS) capped a productive three-game stretch by helping the nationally ranked Flying Dutch beat Franklin, Indiana 85-61 in the championship game of their Tip-Off Tournament.

Geers received Tournament Most Valuable Player honors while headlining an all-tournament first team included teammates Francesca Buchanan and Angelique Gaddy.

Hope coach Brian Morehouse praised the contribution Geers made for the 3-0 Flying Dutch.

"She was in the right place every single time," Morehouse told The Holland Sentinel. "She was there to help her teammates when they got beat. She has evolved into a defensive stopper and has done a great job."

Against Franklin, Geers contributed on both ends of the court. She shared game-high scoring honors with 12 points. She also grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists and recorded two steals.

Hope dominated after holding a 17-16 lead after the first quarter. Other than a 33-second stretch in the first minute of the third quarter, the Flying Dutch maintained a double-digit lead in the second half after pulling ahead 39-29 at halftime.

Franklin (1-2) was limited to 35.5 percent shooting from the field. The Flying Dutch allowed 108 points over two games in the Tip-Off Tournament after yielding 97 in an overtime, season-opening win on Tuesday.

All five of Hope's starters scored at least nine points against Franklin.

Junior guard Tyra Smith of Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) also totaled 12 points.

Gaddy chipped in 11 points. The senior guard from Caledonia, Michigan (GR South Christian) collected five assists.

Buchanan scored 11 points as well. The sophomore center from Grant, Michigan (Sparta) snared a team-high eight rebounds.

Senior forward Mandy Traversa of Winfield, Illinois (Wheaton North) finished with nine points.

Senior guard Paris Madison of Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) added 10 points off the bench.

Other all-tournament selections were Franklin's Mandy Fisher, Finlandia's Julia Daavettila and Carroll's Caylee Koker.
