UMHB women fall to Whitman

Spokane, Washington – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team could not recover from a slow start as the Cru fell to Whitman College 67-54 Saturday in Spokane. UMHB falls to 2-1 on the season with the loss while Whitman improves to 3-0 on the year with the victory.

UMHB trailed 8-6 at the media timeout in the first period, but Whitman closed the quarter with a 12-2 run to grab a 20-8 lead. That lead would grow to 17 points in the second quarter before the Cru whittled it down to 36-29 at the half. UMHB cut the gap to as little as four points in the third before Whitman once again pulled away in the final period as the Cru went cold from the field.

Kendall Rollins led UMHB with 10 points and she added five rebounds. Ten other players scored for the Cru and Kendra Wynn and Diamond Ervin grabbed eight rebounds apiece. UMHB shot just 18 percent from the field in the fourth quarter and finished at 27 percent for the game. The Cru was just 2-15 from three-point range.

Chelsi Brewer had a game-high 16 points to lead Whitman and Emily Rommel and Casey Poe joined her in double figures with 12 points and 10 points respectively. Poe also pulled down 10 rebounds. Whitman shot 37 percent from the field in the game and hit 7-22 from beyond the arc.

The Cru women will now return home to host a pair of games next week. UMHB will open the week with a 7:00 PM tip against Schreiner University on Tuesday. The Cru will host Birmingham Southern for a 7:00 PM start next Saturday.
