ST. MARY'S CITY (MD) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team suffered a 66-63 loss to host St. Mary's College of  Maryland in the opening round of the Dan Greene Memorial Tournament on Friday evening.

DelVal drops into Saturday's consolation game (1 p.m.) against Dickinson College, which fell by a 74-44 score to Messiah College in the other opening round match-up.

The Aggies took their first lead of the game with 5:58 left in the first half as sophomore Danielle Skedzielewski hit a free throw for a 21-20 advantage. The Seahawks' (1-1) Ashley Downs drained a 3-pointer 12 seconds later, but Skedzielewski answered with back-to-back layups for a 25-23 advantage. However, St. Mary's ended the half with a 13-0 run, including eight points from Jane Mathiesen, to take an 11-point lead into the intermission.

The Seahawks built the lead up to as many as 15 in the third quarter and were still up 10 late when DelVal freshman Ashley Smink hit four consecutive free throws to make it 51-45 contest.

In the fourth, sophomore Morgan Mitchell connected on a three-point play with 4:01 remaining to pull the Aggies to within one possession at 58-55. Kerri Kline hit a 3-pointers for St. Mary's but Skedzielewski answered with a trey of her own. The teams traded bombs again with freshman Sarah Wills connecting for DelVal with 37 seconds to go for a 64-61 deficit.

Kline hit one of two free throw attempts with 13 ticks left and the Aggies quickly got down the court and scored on a Skedzielewski layup with eight seconds remaining to trail by two. Mathiesen was fouled and she only hit one of two foul shots, giving DelVal a chance but the Aggies managed just a jumper with one second to go and it was off the mark as the Seahawks held on for the win.

Skedzielewski finished with a career-high 23 points while Smink, in just her second collegiate game, racked up 19 points and six boards. Wills added seven points, eight rebounds and four assists before fouling out while senior Sam Foy had six points and a team-best 10 boards.

Kline led St. Mary's with 21 points while Mathiesen finished with 10 points. Kobe Chanyed added eight points and 13 rebounds.
