BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Moravian College defeated the University of New England, 70-60, in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship on Friday evening (Mar. 4) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Greyhounds (20-7) move into the second round to face Tufts University, which pulled away from Regis College (Mass.) for a 61-49 victory earlier in the night.

The nationally-ranked Nor'easters conclude their season with a record of 25-4.

Moravian pushed its 12-point halftime cushion to 36-22 moments into the 3rd quarter, only to see UNE assemble a 12-2 run to get within four (38-34) at the 3:14 mark of the frame. The Greyhounds, however, were able to go back up by eight through 30 minutes, in spite of shooting just 15.4 percent in the stanza.

The margin hit 12 a couple times during the initial portion of the 4th, but a 7-0 spurt by the Nor'easters had things down to five (57-52) with 2:56 left. A pair of free throws each way were followed by two empty trips per side and UNE was forced to foul to extend the match. Moravian made 11-of-12 at the line in the final 54 seconds to seal it.

In the second half, the Greyhounds went 24-for-26 from the charity stripe -- an 18-point advantage over the hosts (6-of-8).

Camille McPherson tallied a game-high 23 points (including all 13 freebies) to go with nine rebounds to lead the Greyhounds. Alexis Wright added 16 points and 14 boards for the visitors, who out-rebounded UNE by a 50-36 margin. Samantha Caligiuri tossed in 11 points.

For the Nor'easters, Alanna Vose and Alicia Brown each recorded 18 points, while Brown contributed a team-high nine rebounds and five blocks. Meghan Gribbin notched 13 points as well as five assists.

Big Blue made 29.6 percent of its 71 shot attempts in the contest, while turning it over just half (9) as many times as the opponent. "We took care of the ball and we worked hard, said head coach Anthony Ewing. "We just didn't knock down any shots."

The teams traded leads early on, and UNE was up by one (9-8) before McPherson registered five of Moravian's last seven to gain a 15-13 edge after one -- overcoming eight turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.

Wright had half of her point total in the 2nd quarter, as the Greyhounds shot 56 percent from the floor (against UNE's 19%) to up the gap to 34-22. Moravian had the closing seven into the midway break.

The final buzzer signified the end of the careers for Vose, Gribbin, Lauren Hayden, and Sadie DiPierro, who compiled a 101-18 record over their four seasons at UNE, with a 60-3 mark at home and a 69-3 ledger in regular-season conference outings (36-0 at home). The group never experienced a loss in league tournament action, winning four straight postseason titles.

For Vose, she leaves ranked 15th on the program's all-time scoring list (1,140) and 5th in three-pointers made (207) over 117 games. Gribbin's 113 games produced 936 points as well as program-best marks for assists (492) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.22). Hayden played in every single game from 2012-16 (119), finishing as UNE's career leader in steals (404), tied for 7th in assists (327), and 9th in rebounds (688) while recording 927 points. DiPierro departs at 8th in career three pointers (153) and had 693 points over 114 games.

As disappointing as the loss was for Ewing, he said it was tougher to say goodbye to his four seniors. "They left their mark on this program that will never be wiped away as long as this university is in existence. I couldn't be prouder of the four years they put together."
