MSJ Edges Earlham Women's Basketball With Late Run

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Mount St. Joseph scored the game's final 10 points to earn a 57-55 victory over the Earlham College women's basketball team in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) contest on Saturday.

Earlham jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first quarter when junior Hannah Franklin and seniorKiara Scott both hit three-pointers. Leading 17-13 after one quarter, the Quakers would extend their lead to as many as nine points in the second quarter when sophomore Mariah Flynn hit a triple with 6:12 to play in the first half.

Mount St. Joseph, which clinched the No. 5 seed for the HCAC Tournament with the win, ended the first half on a 10-3 run as the Lions went into the locker room trailing 27-25.

The Quakers trailed by as many as five (38-33) midway through the third quarter, but went on an 8-0 run fueled by four points from junior Lexi McFarland to regain a three-point edge.

Leading 43-39 after three quarters, the Quakers scored the first five points of the final ten minutes on a triple from senior Kasin Spay and a layup from Franklin. The Lions would get within six points until junior Shania Feathers made a basket at the 6:05 mark putting the Quakers up 55-50.

Earlham would not score for the rest of the game, however, as the Quakers committed five of their 17 turnovers down the stretch.

Spay (13), Franklin (11), and McFarland (10) all finished in double figures to lead Earlham offensively. Spay added eight rebounds and two steals in her final collegiate game.

Meredith Hartfiel led the Lions with 18 points, all of which came from three-pointers.

Both teams shot a shade over 36 percent from the field. The Lions shot 10-19 from beyond the arc compared to 6-17 for the Quakers. Earlham finished 11-18 from the free throw line compared to 5-14 for Mount St. Joseph. The Quakers won the rebounding battle 45-36.

Earlham ends its season at 5-20 overall with a 3-15 mark in the HCAC.
