Hot-Shooting Bullets Clinch Playoff Spot

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs by shooting a season-high 54.4 percent from the field in a 71-58 victory over Franklin & Marshall College inside the Mayser Center Wednesday night.

Gettysburg (17-5, 11-5 CC) assured itself a spot in the five-team league tournament with two games remaining on the slate. The Bullets canned 31-of-57 field goal attempts for its best shooting mark since logging 54.8 percent against Bryn Mawr College on Jan. 11, 2011.

The visitors wasted no time getting out in front as Franklin & Marshall (6-18, 4-13 CC) was held to a single field goal in the first five minutes. Gettysburg led 14-3 following a lay-up by senior Emily Duggan (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) with 5:17 left in the first quarter. 

The Diplomats steadily chipped away at the deficit and pulled to within two points at 23-21 following a jumper by Erica Brown. The margin remained at two until Gettysburg mounted a 10-3 run to end the half with senior Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) turning in eight of her 13 first-half points.

After hitting on 15-of-28 (53.6 percent) of its shots in the opening half, the Bullets were even better in the final 20 minutes, connecting on 16-of-29 (55.2 percent) attempts. Holding a nine-point advantage early in the third quarter, Gettysburg went on a 16-2 run to grab a 57-34 lead with 1:46 to go in the period. The lead remained above 13 points for the remainder of the game.

The visitors dominated the paint, out-scoring the hosts 38-14 in between the lanes. Gettysburg also posted 18 points off turnovers and out-rebounded Franklin & Marshall 32-29.

Porter finished 9-of-16 for a game-high 21 points. She also posted seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots. Sophomore Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) hit 8-of-13 shots for 16 points and corralled six boards. Freshman Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) reached double-figures for the 10th-straight game with 10 points, while Duggan filled her stat line with nine points, seven rebounds, and six assists with no turnovers. Sophomore Annie Reilly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) tied her personal high with five blocked shots for the second game in a row and she dished out five assists.

Sarah Haddon led Franklin & Marshall with 19 points and eight rebounds. Brown posted 14 points, while Lindsey Powers finished with 12 points and seven boards.

Gettysburg travels to McDaniel College (19-4, 14-2 CC) this Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
