Westfield State Tops Salem State, 100-75

WESTFIELD, Mass. –    Westfield State juniors Jill Valley (Mahar/Orange, Mass.) and Kirsy Segarra (Holyoke/Holyoke, Mass.) each scored 23 points to lead Westfield State as the Owls posted a 100-75  victory over Salem State in in a MASCAC women's basketball game at the Woodward Center on Saturday afternoon.

Westfield improves to 16-7, 9-1 in the MASCAC. Salem State falls to 7-17, 3-8 in the league.

Westfield ran out to a 21-6 lead to start the game and rarely looked back, leading 47-18 at the half, and 72-50 after three quarters.

Westfield set a school record with 15 made three-pointers in the game, shooting 15-44 (37.1 %) from behind the arc.

Segarra led the three-point barrage with 6-8 shooting from downtown. Valley, Ece Eldek (McDuffie/Istanbul/Turkey) and Ashley Giampetruzzi (Manchester Central/Manchester, N.H.) each added a pair of trifectas for the Owls.  Eldek added 13 points for Westfield on the afternoon. Westfield plundered the Vikings for 21 steals, led by five from Segarra.

The Owls cracked the 100-point barrier for the eighth time this season on a jumper by junior Breanna Winberg with just over a minute remaining in the game.

Before the game, Westfield State honored Forbasaw Nkamebo (Amherst/Amherst, Mass.), the lone senior on this year's team.  Nkamebo added 12 points and 11 rebounds to her already-impressive resume.   Through today's game she ranks as the ninth leading scorer in program history with 1,134 points and second leading rebounder. She is just 15 rebounds shy of becoming the Owls' all-time leading rebounder, as she chases Ellen (Carey) Leahy '92, who grabbed 869 rebounds at Westfield State.

Salem State was led by 18 points and nine rebounds from Tahira Peralta (Stoughton/Stoughton, Mass.). Malissa Saad (Holy Name/Worcester, Mass.) added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Vikings.

Westfield will next travel to Bridgewater on Wednesday, a game that has implications in deciding the league regular season title and top seed in the league tournament, which begins February 23. 

Salem will close its regular-season slate with a conference game at Fitchburg on Wednesday.
