HIRAM, Ohio -- Defense was the name of the game for the Hiram College women's basketball team, as they used a strong second half to defeat Oberlin 53-50 on Senior Day.

The Terriers (12-12, 6-9 NCAC) forced the Yeowomen (10-13, 4-10 NCAC) into 34 turnovers in the win. Hiram scored 27 points off of the 34 Oberlin miscues.

In addition, Hiram held Oberlin scoreless for a 9:41 stretch in the third and fourth quarter, which allowed the Terriers to go on an 18-0 run and turn a 41-32 deficit into a 49-41 lead.

Once the Yeowomen snapped their scoring drought, they reeled off a 7-0 run to trim Hiram's lead to 49-48 with 1:00 to go.

The Terriers answered on their next possession with a jumper by sophomore Mercedes Jones(Dayton, Ohio/Ponitz Career Technology Center) to make the score 51-48 with 32 seconds.

Hiram would get a stop and the Yeowomen were forced to foul. Sophomore Kaylee Shockley(Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) drained a pair of free throws to push the Terrier lead to 53-48 with 22 seconds.

Oberlin would get two free throws to cut its deficit to 53-50 and then forced a Hiram turnover on the inbound to regain possession with 14 seconds remaining.

The Yeowomen missed their first 3-point attempt, but grabbed the rebound. Oberlin's second game tying 3-point at the horn was deflected allowing Hiram to grab the win.

Shockley led Hiram with with 20 points and four rebounds, while Jones finished with 12 points. Sophomore Allison Vannoy (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) added eight points and freshman Erica Johnson (Salem, Ohio/West Branch) chipped in with seven.

Oberlin was able to open a 12-8 lead after one period of play and built a 26-18 lead at the break.

But the second half belonged to the Terriers, as they outscored the Yeowomen 35-24 en route to the win.

Hiram was able to overcome a tough shooting night, as they finished 17-of-60 (28.3 percent) and went 4-of-18 (22.2 percent). Oberlin was 21-of-39 (53.8 percent) and knocked down 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) of 3-pointers.

The six NCAC victories are the most for the program since Hiram joined the conference in 1999-00. In addition, the 12 overall victories ties the school record for wins in a season.

The win also clinches a spot in the NCAC Tournament for the Terriers.

Hiram will close out regular season play on Wednesday, with a 6 p.m. road contest at NCAC leading Denison.
